Anne with an e

Lent 2013 Cover   Isaiah 43: 1-7

Question for reflection:
Do you feel that you might be washed away in the rivers of obligations and work and family? Has the heat of conflict and stress felt like it might engulf you? God promises that He is with us and we will not be burned or washed away. When in your life do you feel the presence of God calling you by your name?

Prayer for the day:
O God, in the midst of the busyness of life, let me hear Your voice when you call me; let me recognize my name on Your lips. Though the waters may be strong, I remember Your promise to accompany me and return me to glory. Amen.

In too-plain sight

Lent 2013 Cover  Psalm 27

Question for reflection:
Assume for a moment that you saw evidence of God’s presence in your life today / yesterday, but also that you missed recognizing it. Think back over the events of your day. When did you feel close to God? When did you feel far from God? Where might God have been working in you / your life even if that work seems unfinished as you reflect on it?

Prayer for the day:
As you breathe in: “Open the eyes of my heart, Lord.” As you breathe out: “I want to see you!” Repeat.

Just Breathe

Lent 2013 Cover  Exodus 6:1-13

Question for reflection:
How is breathing a part of your time of prayer? Do you pay attention to how taking a deep breath changes your perspective?

Prayer for the day:
Gracious God, even to breath is grace. In the hurried pace of our lives your gift of life comes with each breath, and yet we take it for granted. With the few breaths of this moment remind us that you are present, blessing us with the sustaining air around us. Blow into us the creative presence of your Spirit so that with each simple breath we might proclaim you are the giver of all life.
Amen

Galilee: Awash in inspiration

Matthew 2:19-23

Question for Reflection:
What spot in nature near your home inspires you? Where is it that you see God in your town?

Prayer for the day:
Creator God, give me the discipline today to notice my surroundings. You speak to me through the wonders of nature and I want to be more aware of your presence in my surroundings, whatever they may be. Amen.

Genealogy and history: By the numbers

Matthew 1:7-17

Question for Reflection:
There is rhythm in the reading of the genealogy of Jesus, as well as symmetry in the numbers: fourteen plus fourteen plus fourteen generations in all. The God-created generational rhythm might go unnoticed except for Matthew’s pointing it out for us in verse 17. Preacher Alyce McKenzie calls us to cultivate “a knack for noticing” how God is at work in, around, and through us. What are you being called to notice this Advent season? What do you need to be paying attention to?

Prayer for the day:

God of the generations, in this time of waiting, grant us a “knack for noticing” your presence in our midst. In the name of Christ we pray, Amen

Remember To Wonder

A Community of Love     Psalm 105: 1-11; 37-45

Prayer for the Day:
Creator of wonder and of marvel, we go forth seeking the great and small miracles in life through which you remind of us of your promise to us. Under clouds to protect us from burning sun and with fire to guide use by night, we celebrate your presence with us. Refresh our senses and help us recognize you in all the varied ways you assure us.

Question for reflection:
When was the last time you were acutely aware of God’s presence? What was going on? What did you see/hear/sense?
