I have never traveled beyond North America, but my roommate in college was from Puerto Rico. Although she was an American, I found it interesting to discover the differences just in that short distance. She ALWAYS was wrapped in a blanket. I don't think she was ever truly warm in northern Indiana (Manchester). My family did take her to Florida with us over Easter break and I think she did thaw a bit there. I did learn to appreciate Caribbean music before it became popular and enjoyed what was then "exotic" foods such as papaya, mango and guava paste. It is enriching to have these experiences and relationships. My husband uses the metaphor of the "toolbox" of life. These are the opportunities we have to use to build our lives. Continue to enjoy and learn. Thank you for sharing.

Julia,

I enjoyed reading your comments about “ways” you are an American.
